Process is any means used by a court to exercise its jurisdiction over a person or specific property. Different courts require different forms of process.
For example:
- Garnishments are served by writ
- Summons are served by warrants
- Judgments are served by replevin
- Court orders are served by a writ of habeas corpus
Process servers will receive documents ready for service and log these documents into a docket book. Once executed, they will make return of the process to the appropriate court agency. This return certifies that service has been made and the document properly delivered.
